State District Director Elections

Background 

The supreme authority of the Wisconsin Farmers Union is vested in grassroots membership, either by referendum vote or by delegates in convention. The responsibility for administration of policies and programs of the cooperative is vested in an elected Board of Directors subject to the provisions of the bylaws and of resolutions adopted at the annual convention. The Board of Directors is composed of WFU members who are elected to their positions. Eight Directors represent each of the geographic districts and one is an at-large statewide representative. All are elected by delegates to the Wisconsin Farmers Union annual Convention and they have three year terms. 

This year, we will be electing board directors for 

  • District 2 - Dunn, Pepin, Pierce, and St. Croix Counties 
  • District 6 -  Adams, Columbia, Green Lake, Juneau, Marathon, Marquette, Portage, Sauk, Waupaca, Waushara, and Wood Counties
  • District 7 - Dane, Jefferson, Kenosha, Racine, and Walworth Counties

Expectations for Board Members 

Required to attend and be prepared for: 

  • Quarterly board meetings range from one to two days in length (at various locations) 
  • Occasional teleconference or videoconference meetings 
  • Any standing/general committee meetings to which the Board Member has been assigned or volunteered to join 
  • Ad-hoc committees (determined as needed and assigned by the WFU President) 
  • State Convention and its appropriate committees 

Regularly attend and participate in: 

  • National Farmers Union Convention 
  • Fly-ins to lobby in Washington D.C. 
  • Board development workshops and trainings 
  • Chapter meetings within your district 
  • County/County-local presidents’ meetings
  • State legislative or regulatory hearings 
  • Wisconsin Farmers Union state lobby day 

Voluntarily represent WFU at external events: 

  • Including but not limited to
    • Wisconsin Agriculture Outlook Forum
    • Discovery Farms Wisconsin
    • DATCP Advisory Boards 
    • USDA’s Advisory Committee on Beginning Farmers and Ranchers
    • Presentations on agriculture related topics
  • Media interviews, panels and discussions

Compensation

It is the policy of Wisconsin Farmers Union to reimburse Directors for ordinary and necessary expenses while they are engaged in authorized cooperative business. All Directors can receive travel reimbursement and a per diem as outlined in the Board Responsibilities and Policies Booklet. The Board President is compensated a salary for their duties associated with Wisconsin Farmers Union, National Farmers Union and Farmers Union Enterprises/Farmers Union Industries.
